Maui's Telescope

Maui's Telescope

Inspiration

The legend of maui is that he travelled around the pacific in his Waka navigating by the stars and doing many great feats like capturing the sun with only flax ropes to give us more time in the day,a the magical fish hook made from a jawbone that he used to pull up the north island (Te Ika Maui) of New Zealand from the Pacific ocean.

This Piece is made from silky oak which is a widespread tree that grows all over the world. This wood represents all the different cultures that makes modern day Aotearoa/New Zealand. The flax weave pattern represents the flax ropes that he used to hold the sun. In this piece ties all our nationalities together and the whalebone pins honours these magnificent whales that roamed in abundance around our shores.

Cracked Pepper

Cracked Pepper

Inspiration /  Description

This was a very challenging piece that I had been thinking and planning for quite sometime. I wanted to highlight and bring the colours through in the timber but also keep the natural and rawness from the wood. The natural opening in the wood of this vessel make the piece very intriguing and the hundreds of colours that come through shows off what nature can do when left alone.

This Pepper and Ebony wood with a copper insert has a continuous flowing curve from the foot to the rim and continues from the rim to the opening on top. This peace has two rings of flax weave pattern that is highlighted with copper gilding. The opening has a piece of copper between the Pepper wood and the ebony wood which ties it all together. With the thin walls it makes the piece very light and tactile.

Kintsugi Ironbark

Kintsugi Ironbark

This lidded box is made from ironbark wood and is the second piece I have done with this Japanese Kintsugi technique. Kintsugi, also known as Kintsukuroi, is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique. As a philosophy, it treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise so by having the contrasting white clean lines in the cracks draws your eye to the detail on the lid.

This received a second place at the 2019 Royal Easter Show Art competition in the lidded box category. More photos available with email enquiry

Pata/Pot
Pata/Pot

The meaning

This name is the NZ Maori word meaning pot, basin, container or kettle.
I researched photos of old relics of watering containers, pots and did my interpretation of this. There are hundreds of colours that makes up this piece.

Description & Process

This hollow form is made from 30,000 + year old Ancient Swamp Kauri only found in New Zealand and has a wave of green stone coloured resin through one side. that ties the two pieces together and  represents  family coming together after some time apart. I have gilded this piece with gold, silver, copper leaf then created a metal patina patination effect. The metal has created an array of colours which represents the metals & minerals of our land.

Pohutukawa Flowering

Pohutukawa Flowering

This wonderful New Zealand native tree has a beautiful red flower that covers the whole tree.  We have a nickname for it, NZ Christmas tree as it flowers in summer.

These trees are spread along our beaches in the north and I have lots of good memories hanging out with family & friends under one of our New Zealand treasures.

The flowing design on the rim represents the beautiful red flowers of the Pohutukawa.

Balance

Each of the five wooden spheres has been carefully hollowed and joined. This
allows the spheres to balance in a manner which seems impossible, or at least
highly unstable.  They have been gilded with multiple layers of differing
extremely fine foils, covering the Ancient Kauri in many places, but emphasising the
growth rings in the timber that remind us of our own inner strength,
uniqueness and personal growth.
